The Fashion Innovation Alliance convened policymakers, academics, and fashion and technology leaders on Capitol Hill on June 15 to focus on an emerging industry in which technology is literally woven into fabrics and embedded in other apparel and accessories to create the fashions of the future.

“We wanted to bring leaders together to focus on fashion tech because the industry cannot realize its full potential without a supportive ecosystem around it,” said Fashion Innovation Alliance CEO and Founder, Kenya Wiley. “Fashion tech companies rely on trademarks to guard their brands, and patents to protect their inventions. They also need policies and programs that support STEM education and research and development to help advance new products and technologies. Government, business and academia need to work together to ensure the fashion tech industry thrives.”

Microsoft announced its support of the Alliance at the event. Other speakers included Rep. Anna Eshoo (CA-18), Rep. Suzan DelBene (WA-01), and representatives from Visa, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the Fashion Law Institute at Fordham Law School, and the Brooklyn Fashion + Design Accelerator at Pratt Institute.
