Theaster Gates is a Chicago-based artist, professor and co-chair of Pradaâ€™s new Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Council â€” sharing his voice and expertise to global discussions around diversity and culture in fashion.
Creating art and social transformation has always been at the heart of Gatesâ€™s work. In 2010, Gates founded the Rebuild Foundation â€” a non-profit organization focused on rebuilding the cultural foundations of neighborhoods and revitalizing communities, with a focus on Chicagoâ€™s South Side.
Gates has received international recognition for his works. His public collections include: the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; and Marciano Art Foundation, Los Angeles.
Theaster Gates currently has his first solo museum exhibition in France â€” entitled Amalgam â€” exploring social histories of migration and interracial relations by focusing on a specific episode in American history.Â Theaster Gatesâ€™s Amalgam will be on display at Palais de Tokyo, Paris until May 12, 2019.
